The only means of obtaining an
ARDMS credential is by examination. Required prerequisites must be met before an applicant can earn an
ARDMS credential.
Please note: Applicants may pursue the FE specialty under either the RDMS or RDCS credential. Once you take the examination under either the RDMS or RDCS credential area, it cannot be switched.
Applicants may apply and take the SPI examination and the specialty examination in any order. However, once the first examination is passed (either the SPI or specialty), you are required to take and pass the second examination within five years of passing the first examination.

EXAMINATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
ARDMS-certified sonography professionals meet rigorous criteria in both knowledge and expertise in Sonography.
Applicants must meet prerequisites in education and clinical experience and pass
ARDMS examinations, to earn one or more of the following credentials:
• Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer® (RDMS®)
• Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer® (RDCS®)
• Registered Vascular Technologist® (RVT®)
• Registered Musculoskeletal™ Sonographer (RMSKS™)
• Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation® (RPVI®)
• Registered in Musculoskeletal® (RMSK®) sonography
ARDMS-awarded credentials document personal achievement of recognized professional standards and are widely accepted in the medical community by sonography and vascular professional organizations. However,
ARDMS does not validate the day-to-day job performance of any sonography professional.
EXAMINATION DEVELOPMENT, SCORING AND SECURITY
All
ARDMS examinations go through a rigorous and labor-intensive process to ensure that they accurately and thoroughly assess the knowledge and skills of medical professionals. In fact, developing a new one — from what to test to how to score it — requires an examination development process that can take up to several years.
Examinations for sonographers do not consider, are not based upon, and should not be construed to be either a measurement of diagnostic assessment tasks as utilized by licensed physicians or an evaluation of the competency of a practicing physician using ultrasound for diagnosis.
